Accelerated nursing programs can be a fantastic way to get a head start on a brand new and exciting career. Getting started the right way though means you know not only what to expect, but what you need beforehand for a smooth transition. Accelerated BSNs are, in general, second degree programs. Second degree programs allow for shorter programs of study, because the first degree provided the basic educational background. In order to join a second degree accelerated BSN, which can be completed in less than a year, you then obviously need a first degree, a bachelor’s in any other field.

In addition to possessing a degree in a previous course of study, a prospective student for accelerated nursing degree programs need to have minimum GPAs. Most programs want you to have a 3.0. This is because the programs want to know that you are really serious about learning, and that you’ve proven to be a good student.

Another reason that students are required to have a previous degree, is because accelerated nursing programs are just that. Again, this isn’t for a student who is just starting out. This is for students who again have some sort of educational foundation that they can apply to their accelerated BSN.

Another requirement that many accelerated BSNs have is that you will need to have taken a sampling of some specific courses. These include physical sciences like biology and anatomy, and may also include social sciences, and classes that cover other areas of the diverse field of nursing, including communication, psychology and more.

The good news is that if you don’t have one or a few of these required classes, you will generally still be accepted into the program of your choice. The difference will be that you then will need to take that course in the BSN program. This enables you to proceed, but adds extra classes and time onto the length of the full program itself, which is why some people end up taking closer to 18 months to complete their program.

Every nursing program is going to be different from the next in terms of their requirements and other specific standards or regulations. Therefore you need to take the time to look into the program you’re applying to in order to make sure you’re up to their standards. The above specifications though are pretty basic and fairly common, so it should give you a good understanding about what to expect and look for.

Obviously the first and foremost factor for a second degree accelerated nursing program is the first degree itself. You may also need a minimum GPA level, as well as specific previous completed courses. Either way, just make sure to find out what to specifically look for so you don’t end up with any unwelcome surprises at the last minute on your way to an accelerated BSN.
